Is Air India Costlier Than IndiGo? Fare Types Compared Without Guesswork

Neither airline is always costlier. On any given day the cheaper one depends on the route, the travel date, how many seats are left in each fare bucket, and what the fare includes. Air India sells Value, Classic and Flex in domestic economy. IndiGo sells Saver, Flexi Plus and UpFront. Compare like for like by checking inclusions, not just the headline price.

“Which is cheaper, Air India or IndiGo?” has no fixed answer, and anyone quoting a standard gap is guessing. Here is how to compare the two properly, so the fare you pick is the fare you actually wanted.

Why do Air India and IndiGo fares differ on the same day?

Airlines do not sell a flight at one price. Each flight has a stack of fare buckets, and the price you see is the lowest bucket that still has seats. As a bucket sells out, the next one up becomes the cheapest. Two airlines on the same route can be at completely different points in that stack on the same morning.

Four things move the number the most:

  • Route: a route with many daily departures from both airlines is more competitive than one where one airline has a near monopoly.
  • Date and time: festival weeks, Friday evenings and Sunday evenings tend to price higher than mid-week departures.
  • Days to departure: fares usually rise as the flight fills and the date gets closer, though not in a straight line.
  • Inclusions: a fare that bundles a checked bag or a seat is not the same product as a bare fare.

Because all four vary day to day, a gap you saw last month on one route says little about a different route today.

What are the Air India domestic economy fare types?

Air India’s domestic economy fares come in three families: Value, Classic and Flex. Air India presents them as part of its Smart Fares, introduced from 17 October 2024. In broad terms, Value is the lowest-priced option with the fewest inclusions and the least flexibility, Classic sits in the middle, and Flex is the most flexible and the most expensive of the three.

Air India states on its own fare page that fare attributes and benefits can change without prior notice, and that the rules in force when the ticket is issued apply. So the exact baggage allowance, seat charge and change or cancellation fee should be read from the fare card shown at booking, not from an old article, including this one.

What are the IndiGo fare types?

IndiGo’s current lineup is Saver, Flexi Plus and UpFront for economy, and Stretch and Stretch Plus for its business product. IndiGo has also introduced a Lite fare for cabin-bag-only travellers (from July 2026), which IndiGo sells only through its own direct channels such as its website, app and contact centre, so you will not see it elsewhere.

The same logic applies: Saver is the main entry economy fare (Lite sits below it for cabin-bag-only travellers), Flexi Plus is the more flexible economy option, and UpFront is a higher-priced economy fare with its own set of inclusions that you should read on the fare card. Stretch and Stretch Plus are business-class fares and are not comparable with a regular economy ticket.

As with Air India, the inclusions and fees are set by the airline and can be revised. Always read the fare card before paying.

How do I compare Air India and IndiGo like for like?

Do not compare the lowest Air India fare with the lowest IndiGo fare and stop there. Build a short checklist and fill it in for each option:

QuestionWhy it matters
Is a checked bag included? If you need one, add its cost to the cheaper fare before comparing.
Is seat selection free or paid?A paid seat can close a price gap quickly.
What is the change fee?Matters if your plans are not fixed.
What is the cancellation rule? Some entry fares are non-refundable or heavily penalised.
Departure time and airport terminal?A cheaper fare at an awkward hour may cost you in cab fares or a lost day.

Once you line these up, the “costlier” airline is often the better value for your trip, or the reverse. If you travel with only a cabin bag and will not change plans, the entry fares are directly comparable. If you check luggage or might reschedule, compare Air India Classic or Flex with IndiGo Flexi Plus instead.

How can I catch the best fare on either airline?

Search both airlines for your exact date on one results page, then look at the next and previous day. Fares can differ noticeably between neighbouring dates, and a one-day shift sometimes matters more than the choice of airline.

If your date is flexible or you are booking well ahead, set a price alert rather than checking by hand every evening. You will get a nudge when the fare moves, and you can decide with the inclusions in mind.

One aviation detail worth knowing: the cheapest fare shown is a bucket of seats, not a special aircraft or a different cabin. Everyone on a flight sits in the same cabin, and the seat next to you may have been bought at a very different price.

Common Questions

Is Air India always more expensive than IndiGo?

No. There is no fixed pattern. On some routes and dates Air India is cheaper, on others IndiGo is, and the order can flip within a few days. Check your own route and date.

Which Air India fare is closest to IndiGo Saver?

Air India Value is the entry-level domestic economy fare, so it is the natural match for IndiGo Saver. Compare what each includes before treating them as equal.

Which IndiGo fare is closest to Air India Flex?

Both are positioned as the more flexible options. Compare IndiGo Flexi Plus with Air India Flex, and read the change and cancellation terms for each at booking.

Do web check-in or airport check-in cost extra?

Checking in is free on Indian airlines, both on the web and at the airport. Charges that do exist usually relate to seats, extra baggage or changes.

What is IndiGo Lite?

IndiGo Lite is a cabin-bag-only fare that IndiGo offers only through its own direct channels (website, app and contact centre). It will not appear on other sites, so a comparison elsewhere will not show it. Check the fare card on IndiGo for what it includes.

Can fare rules change after I read about them?

Yes. Both airlines can revise fare inclusions and fees. The fare card shown when you book is the one that applies to your ticket.

Search Air India and IndiGo side by side on HappyFares, with zero convenience fee on domestic flights, and set a price alert so you hear when your fare moves.

Fare inclusions, rules and fees change. Verify current specifics with Air India, IndiGo or DGCA before you travel.
