Excess baggage is one of the easiest fees to avoid if you know the numbers before you pack. These figures come from Akasa Air’s own baggage page, read in October 2026.

How much baggage does Akasa Air allow for free?

The baggage page lists 15 kg per customer, in one piece, on domestic flights, and 30 kg per customer, in two pieces, on most international flights (the page lists one piece up to 20 kg for Phuket and Hanoi). A single bag must not weigh more than 32 kg, and the total of length, width and height must not exceed 158 cm.

In the cabin, the page allows one handbag up to 7 kg and 115 cm in total dimensions. The page does not split the checked allowance by fare, so if you are comparing Akasa Saver and Flexi, read the baggage line on the fare card in the booking flow before you pay. Eligible students on a student fare can carry one bag up to 25 kg on domestic flights, according to the same page.

What are the prepaid excess baggage rates for domestic flights?

Akasa Air’s domestic slabs are:

Extra weightPrice (Rs)
3 kg2,250
5 kg3,750
10 kg7,500
15 kg11,250
20 kg15,000
30 kg22,500

The page also lists a per-kg rate of Rs 800 for domestic. Prepaid excess is bought per sector, cannot be transferred to another person, and once bought it can be changed or cancelled only along with the flight booking. If you change the flight date, the purchase moves to the new booking, per the page.

The page does not publish a separate airport per-kg rate in a form we can read clearly, so do not assume the airport price equals the prepaid price. Buying online before you leave home is the safer way to know what you will pay.

How much does extra baggage cost on international flights?

International prices depend on the route. Akasa lists separate tables for flights from India to Gulf destinations and for flights back to India, with the return prices shown in local currency, and notes that rates to India change with the exchange rate. For routes such as Abu Dhabi, Doha, Riyadh and Kuwait, the page shows a per-kg rate of Rs 1,500 from India. International excess costs noticeably more than domestic, so compare the table for your exact route before paying.

For a journey that connects to another airline, the page lists separate prepaid options that must be bought online, with the domestic leg within 48 hours of the international flight. Those cannot be bought at the airport.

What do extra pieces, oversize bags and sports gear cost?

  • An additional piece costs Rs 1,000 domestic (pre-booking or at the airport) and Rs 2,000 international, per the page.
  • Oversize baggage beyond 158 cm is Rs 2,500 per piece on domestic flights, and more on international ones.
  • Domestic sports equipment is Rs 2,000 per item if pre-booked and Rs 2,500 at the airport; international is higher.

Check the item against the weight limit too: no single bag above 32 kg is accepted, however much you are willing to pay.

How do you add baggage to an Akasa Air booking?

Open Manage Booking on akasaair.com or in the Akasa Air app, enter your booking reference and last name, and choose baggage. The page says you can pre-purchase additional allowance online up to two hours before the flight departs. Do it earlier than that, because airport counters are the place of last resort.

For a full comparison of how Akasa stacks up against other Indian airlines, see our guide to excess baggage charges on Indian airlines.

Before you pay for slabs, weigh your bags at home. A kitchen or luggage scale takes a minute, and it tells you whether you need the 3 kg slab, the 5 kg slab, or nothing at all. If you are only a little over, moving heavy items such as books, shoes or chargers into your 7 kg handbag can bring the checked bag back under the limit, as long as the handbag stays within its own weight and size limit.

Also think about the whole trip. Prepaid excess is bought for each sector separately, so a return journey needs a purchase on each leg. Doing both at once while you are in Manage Booking saves a second trip to the page later.

Can I share my extra baggage with a co-passenger?

No. The page says prepaid excess baggage is non-transferable.
