Wedding Season Flights 2026: What Opens on 20 November and How to Book Around It

India’s wedding season resumes on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Friday 20 November 2026, when the four-month Chaturmas period ends and auspicious ceremonies restart. Wedding travel does not spread evenly after that. It clusters onto a handful of muhurat dates in late November and early December, then pauses again for Kharmas from mid-December to mid-January.

Wedding travel is the least understood demand spike in the Indian aviation calendar, because it is driven by a calendar most booking tools do not show you.

Why does 20 November matter?

Dev Uthani Ekadashi, also called Prabodhini Ekadashi, falls on Friday 20 November 2026. It marks the end of Chaturmas, the four-month period during which Hindu tradition suspends weddings, engagements, housewarmings and other auspicious ceremonies.

The practical effect is a dam breaking. Ceremonies that could not be held since roughly July are all scheduled into the weeks that follow, which is why late November is one of the densest domestic travel periods of the year even though it carries no festival of its own.

How do muhurat dates change flight demand?

Most travel demand spreads across a season. Wedding demand does not, because a wedding cannot be held on any convenient date. It has to fall on an auspicious muhurat, and there are only so many of those.

The result is that thousands of weddings across the country happen on the same handful of dates, and the guests all fly on the day before and the day after. In 2026 the main clusters run from about 21 to 26 November and again through the first fortnight of December. Exact muhurat lists vary by panchang, region and community, so treat those as the shape of the season rather than a fixed timetable.

If your dates land on a cluster, you are competing with a lot of people for the same seats. If you can travel a day early or a day late, you usually step out of the peak entirely.

When does the season pause?

Kharmas. When the sun enters Sagittarius in mid-December, weddings stop again until Makar Sankranti in mid-January. That creates a genuine trough in the second half of December, interrupted only by the separate Christmas and New Year holiday demand, which travels to different places.

The season then resumes in mid-January and runs through the first quarter of 2027. If your wedding travel is flexible across months, January to March is generally easier to book than late November.

Which routes carry wedding traffic?

Two distinct flows, and they behave differently.

The destination-wedding flow moves into Udaipur, Jaipur and Jodhpur in Rajasthan, and into Goa. These are relatively small airports handling concentrated, date-specific demand, so seats on the exact wedding dates go early and alternatives are limited. Udaipur in particular has far fewer daily flights than the demand on a peak muhurat date would suggest.

The larger and less visible flow is ordinary domestic travel: guests flying to hometowns across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Gujarat and the south for family weddings. This does not concentrate on any one airport, but it lifts demand broadly across the network on cluster dates.

How should you book wedding travel?

Earlier than feels necessary, because the dates are fixed and known months ahead. The wedding date does not move if fares rise.

For group travel, decide early whether you are booking one large group or several smaller bookings. Large parties on a single booking can be harder to accommodate on a busy date, while separate bookings give you more seat options but no protection if one flight is disrupted. If the group must arrive together for a ceremony, favour an earlier flight with a buffer over the convenient one.

Two more things worth doing. Check the airport’s realistic capacity rather than just the fare, especially for Udaipur and Jodhpur, and consider a nearby larger airport with a road transfer if the smaller one is tight. And book the return at the same time, because everyone leaves the morning after the reception.

Common Questions

When does the 2026 wedding season start?

On Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Friday 20 November 2026, when Chaturmas ends and auspicious ceremonies resume.

Why are there no weddings before that?

Chaturmas is a four-month period, associated with Lord Vishnu’s cosmic sleep, during which tradition suspends weddings and other auspicious functions. Dev Uthani Ekadashi ends it.

What is Kharmas and when is it?

Kharmas is the inauspicious period beginning when the sun enters Sagittarius in mid-December and ending around Makar Sankranti in mid-January. Weddings pause through it.

Are muhurat dates the same everywhere in India?

No. Lists vary by panchang, region and community, and families often consult their own astrologer. Use published lists as a guide and confirm the specific date with the family.

Which airports get busiest for destination weddings?

Udaipur, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Goa. Udaipur and Jodhpur are the tightest, because daily flight frequency is low relative to peak-date demand.

Is it cheaper to marry or travel in January?

Travel in the January to March window is generally easier to book than the late-November cluster, since the dates are spread over a longer period rather than compressed into two weeks.

Compare flights for your wedding dates on HappyFares, and check the day before and after before you settle on the muhurat-date flight.

Muhurat dates follow the lunisolar calendar and vary by panchang, region and community. Confirm dates with your family or local panchang, and verify fares and schedules with the airline before you book.
