Jain Meals on Flights: Which Airlines Serve Them and How to Order

Several airlines flying from India offer a Jain meal, usually coded VJML, including Air India, Air India Express, Emirates, Etihad and Singapore Airlines. It leaves out onion, garlic and root vegetables. Request it through Manage Booking at least 24 hours before departure, or earlier on long-haul flights, because special meals are loaded on board in limited numbers.

If you follow Jain food rules, a flight can be the hardest part of the trip to plan. Here is what each airline says on its own pages, so you know what to ask for and when.

What is a Jain meal on a flight?

Airlines list it as a special meal with the code VJML, short for Vegetarian Jain Meal. Air India says onions, garlic, ginger, mushrooms and root vegetables are not used in its Jain meal. Etihad describes its Jain meal as built from non-root vegetables, sometimes with rice, prepared in an Asian style, and excluding onions, garlic and root vegetables. Emirates and the other airlines publish their own ingredient notes, so read the description for your flight.

The exact recipe differs by airline and caterer. If your own rules go beyond the airline’s list, for example on specific spices or on food cooked in shared kitchens, ask the airline before you fly rather than assuming. Many Jain travellers also carry dry snacks as a back-up, subject to airport security rules.

Which airlines serve Jain meals from India?

  • Air India: lists a Vegetarian Jain Meal (VJML) among its special meals. Its dining page advises requesting a special meal at least 24 hours before the flight.
  • Air India Express: its pre-book pages mention vegetarian and Jain options for hot meals. The pre-book cut-off differs between domestic and international flights and has changed over time, so check the deadline shown for your flight.
  • Emirates: offers a Jain meal on request. Emirates pages quote different cut-offs, 24 hours on some and 48 hours on others, so ask as early as you can and confirm the deadline with the airline.
  • Etihad: VJML, requested through Etihad’s manage booking page. Confirm the exact cut-off with Etihad when you book, and note that choices can be limited on short flights.
  • Singapore Airlines: VJML, described as cooked in an Indian style. Its general rule is to select the meal at least 24 hours before departure, and its page lists longer lead times for some departure cities, so check the table for yours.
  • Qatar Airways: lists Jain among its special meal choices. Its pages quote both 24 and 48 hours as the cut-off, so treat 48 hours as the safe limit.
  • Akasa Air: its menu announcement says the Cafe Akasa menu includes Jain meals, and meals can be pre-booked on its website and app.
  • IndiGo: meals are pre-booked from the 6E Eats menu. We could not find a dedicated Jain meal page, so look for a Jain-labelled item on your route when you book.

How do you order a Jain meal after booking?

The route is almost the same everywhere. Open Manage Booking on the airline’s own website or app, enter your booking reference and last name, and look for a meal or special request option for each traveller. Air India says to use the Passenger Details page of Manage Booking, and that a travel agent can also place the request if you booked through one.

If you do not see a meal option, the cause is often the flight itself rather than your request. Air India notes that pre-booking special meals is not available on codeshare journeys through its website or customer support. Short flights may also offer very limited choices. In that case, contact the airline using its official channels.

How early should you request it?

Treat the airline’s stated hours as the last possible moment, not the target. Special meals are prepared in limited quantities, and a request placed at the cut-off can fail if a flight changes or the booking is edited. Ask when you buy the ticket, or as soon after as you can. If you change your flight date or fly a different sector, check that the meal request carried over.

On a connecting itinerary with two airlines, each airline handles its own meals. Air India says partner-airline meals must be arranged with the partner directly, so check the same for any other airline in your itinerary.

What if the Jain meal is not available?

Some meals are simply not catered on every flight. Air India says that if your meal is not available it will offer an alternative, and Singapore Airlines says not every special meal is offered on every flight. Contact the airline before departure so you know in advance, and pack fruit, nuts or dry snacks that fit your rules.

A small aviation fact: meals for a flight are loaded on the aircraft at the departure airport well before boarding, which is why a request after the cut-off often cannot be met even when you are already at the gate.

Common Questions

Is VJML the code for Jain meals?

Air India, Etihad and Singapore Airlines use VJML for the Vegetarian Jain Meal, and Emirates also offers a Jain meal. Some third-party sites quote other codes, so go by what your airline shows in Manage Booking.

Does a Jain meal cost extra?

It depends on the airline and the fare. On airlines that sell meals in advance, such as IndiGo and Akasa, a pre-booked meal is a paid add-on, so check the price shown in the booking flow before you confirm.

Can I request a Jain meal at the airport?

Generally no. Airlines load special meals in advance, and Qatar Airways states that special meals cannot be requested on board. Request it online before the cut-off.

Are Jain meals available on short domestic flights?

It depends on the airline and the flight. Etihad, for example, says choices can be limited on short flights, so on short sectors check the airline’s page before relying on a special meal.

Can I bring my own Jain food?

Dry packaged snacks are usually fine, but liquids and gels are limited by airport security rules. Check the airline’s policy and the airport’s security guidance before you pack.

Do I need to request it again for the return flight?

Check each flight. Special meal requests are normally recorded per flight segment, so confirm that both directions show your meal.
