An eight-hour overnight connection is either a miserable night on a metal bench or a decent sleep in a small room, and the difference is usually about 20 minutes of research. Here is how airport rest facilities work in India, and what to verify before you count on one.
What counts as a sleeping pod or nap room?
The term covers several very different products, and knowing which one you are booking matters more than the label on the door.
- Sleeping pods or cabins. Single or twin capsules with a bed, a light and a power point, sold in blocks of hours. Bathrooms are usually shared.
- Transit hotels. Proper rooms with an attached bathroom, located inside the terminal, also sold in hourly blocks rather than by the night.
- Day-use hotel rooms. Normal hotel rooms near the airport, booked for part of a day. These are outside the terminal, which has visa and re-entry implications.
- Lounges with recliners. Not beds, but a reclining chair, food and often a shower, usually with a time cap per visit.
Snooze rooms attached to a lounge sit somewhere between the last two. If sleep is the point of the booking, check whether you are paying for a flat bed or a chair before you commit.
Which Indian airports have them?
India’s biggest international terminals are where you are most likely to find a genuine rest facility. Delhi’s Terminal 3 and Mumbai’s Terminal 2 have both hosted airside transit-hotel and pod-style accommodation, and several other large airports, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai, offer lounges with recliners or shower rooms, along with hotels close enough to sell day-use rooms between flights.
Beyond that short list, be careful. Operators change, contracts end, and facilities get relocated during terminal expansion work, which is constant at Indian airports right now. A pod hotel that existed on your last trip may have moved, closed or gone landside. What do airport rest facilities cost in India?
They are priced in blocks of time rather than per night, commonly in three, six or twelve hour slots, with the clock starting when you check in. Rates vary by airport, by whether the room is airside or landside, by cabin type, and by how busy the terminal is on a red-eye night. Extra hours are usually billed pro rata.

If you are connecting between two international flights without an Indian visa, only an airside option is usable. If you are transferring from an international arrival to a domestic departure, you will normally clear immigration and customs and collect your bags anyway, which puts you landside and makes a nearby day-use hotel a fair choice. Entry into the departures hall requires a valid ticket and photo ID, and some airports restrict how early you can come in, so a very early arrival can leave you waiting outside.
How do you rest in a terminal without paying?
Free sleep in an airport is a matter of location and preparation rather than luck. Pick a quiet pier away from active gates, avoid seating next to the announcement speakers, and look for the benches without fixed armrests. Many Indian terminals have designated quiet zones or lightly used waiting areas near the far gates.
- Set alarms on two devices, because several large Indian airports no longer make routine boarding announcements.
