You plug in somewhere over central India, land three hours later barely any better off, and wonder what the port was doing all that time. The answer is engineering history, not sabotage.

Why is the USB port at your seat so slow?

Because it was never meant to be a charger. On most aircraft the USB-A socket hangs off the in-flight entertainment system, which was built to power a screen, a handset and occasionally a reading light. Charging your phone was a courtesy feature bolted onto that design, and the current available at each socket was capped accordingly.

Those older ports typically supply somewhere around 5W to 10W, which is the sort of output a phone charger from a decade ago produced. A modern handset can often pull several times that from a wall charger. Plug into the aircraft and it simply takes what it is given, which is why the battery percentage moves at a glacial pace.

There is a second squeeze. The power for a block of seats usually comes through a shared seat electronics box, with a fixed budget for the whole group. Do AC sockets and USB-C ports charge faster?

Why does the port sometimes do nothing at all?

Several ordinary reasons, most of them fixable. On many aircraft the in-seat power only comes alive once the entertainment system boots, which can be after the doors close or after take-off, so an early plug-in shows nothing. Cabin crew can often reset a seat group if a port is dead, and it is worth asking politely rather than jabbing the socket.

The rest is wear and tear. Seat USB ports live a hard life: thousands of insertions, spilled drinks, cables yanked sideways during turbulence.   • Reduce the drain. Airplane mode stops the phone hunting for a network, and low screen brightness plus downloaded music or video makes a big difference. If the phone is drawing more than the port supplies, the battery falls while plugged in.
  • Use a decent cable. A short, good-quality cable loses less than a long thin one.
  • Keep it cool. Phones slow their own charging when they get warm, so a handset buried under a blanket in direct sun charges worse than one sitting in the open.

What are the rules on carrying a power bank?
