Chennai Margazhi Music Season 2026-27: Flights and Travel Guide

The Chennai Margazhi music season is the city’s annual run of Carnatic concerts and dance recitals, centred on the Tamil month of Margazhi, which is calculated to begin on Wednesday 16 December 2026 and end on Thursday 14 January 2027. Fly into Chennai International Airport (MAA), book early because December is busy, and check each sabha’s own schedule before fixing return dates.

Every winter, Chennai turns into the busiest stage in South Indian classical music. If you are planning to be there for the 2026-27 season, here is what to know before you book a flight.

What is the Chennai Margazhi music season?

It is the city’s December music and dance season, also called the Madras Music Season or Margazhi Utsavam. Carnatic vocal and instrumental concerts, Bharatanatyam and other classical dance recitals, and lecture-demonstrations are spread across many halls in the city.

The roots of the season go back to 1927, when a resolution passed at the All India Music Conference in Madras led to the founding of the Madras Music Academy. From 1928 the Academy organised the season every December. Today the season is far bigger than one institution: it is run by many sabhas (cultural associations), and it is generally described as stretching from around mid-November into January.

When does Margazhi 2026-27 start and end?

Margazhi is a Tamil solar month that begins when the Sun enters Dhanu (Sagittarius). Calendar calculations put the 2026 start on Wednesday 16 December 2026 and the end on Thursday 14 January 2027. These dates are calculated, so a local temple calendar or panchang can differ by a day. Thai, the next month, usually begins on 15 January 2027.

The concert season does not wait for the month to start. Many sabhas begin their programmes in late November or early December, and the busiest weeks usually fall in the second half of December. Individual concert schedules for 2026-27 are published by each sabha, so check the sabha’s website or a season guide before locking in your dates.

Which venues host the concerts?

There is no single venue. The Music Academy on T.T.K. Road is the best known, and its main hall is named after T.T. Krishnamachari. Other sabhas across the city run their own halls, and many offer free morning and afternoon concerts, while evening concerts are usually ticketed.

Because the halls are spread across different neighbourhoods, it helps to decide which concerts you want first and then choose where to stay. Chennai traffic is heavy in the evening, so a hotel close to your main venue saves more time than a cheaper one far away.

The season is also not only about concerts. Many visitors come for the morning lecture-demonstrations, the dance recitals and the general atmosphere of a city that plans its December around music. If this is your first visit, pick two or three programmes that matter most to you and leave the rest of the day open, rather than trying to fit in a full schedule every day.

Which airport do you fly into, and how do you get to the city?

Chennai International Airport has the IATA code MAA. The code dates from the city’s old name, Madras. The airport is at Tirusulam, roughly 21 km south-west of the city centre. Terminals 1 and 4 handle domestic flights, and Terminal 2, which began operations in July 2023, handles international flights.

The Chennai Metro Blue Line has a station at the airport, and its concourse links to the passenger terminals. That is a useful option when road traffic is heavy. Prepaid taxis and app cabs are the other usual choices. Allow generous time on concert evenings, when roads around the main halls fill up.

How should you plan flights for the season?

  • Book early. December is a popular travel month in India, and fares to a city hosting a major festival tend to rise closer to departure.
  • Pick flexible dates if you can. Mid-week flights are often cheaper than Fridays and Sundays, though this varies by route.
  • Do not book a tight same-day return. Evening concerts can run late, and a morning departure after a late night is stressful.
  • Leave a buffer on arrival day. Weather or air traffic delays can happen at any airport, so avoid scheduling a concert within a couple of hours of landing.
  • Check the airline’s fare rules. If your plans may shift once the sabha schedules are out, a fare that allows changes can be worth the difference.

Common Questions

What is the airport code for Chennai?

MAA. It stands for Madras, the city’s former name.

Is the Margazhi season only in December?

No. The month of Margazhi runs from mid-December to mid-January, but the concert season is generally described as starting in mid-November and running into January.

Where is the Music Academy?

It is on T.T.K. Road in Chennai. It is one of the most prominent sabhas, but concerts also take place at many other halls around the city.

Are all concerts ticketed?

Not all. Many sabhas offer free morning and afternoon concerts, while evening concerts are typically ticketed. Each sabha sets its own policy, so check before you go.

Can I take the metro from the airport?

Yes. Chennai International Airport has a Chennai Metro Blue Line station connected to the terminals.

Should I book flights before concert schedules are announced?

If your dates are fixed by work or school, book early. If they depend on a particular artist, wait for that sabha’s schedule, but be ready for fares to move.
