Every winter, Chennai turns into a city of concerts, and rasikas travel in from across India and abroad. This guide explains the season, what we know about 2026 and how to plan your flights.

What is the Chennai December Music Season?

The December Music Season is a long run of Carnatic music and classical dance programmes held across Chennai by sabhas, which are cultural associations with their own halls and programme calendars. It is also called the Margazhi season, after the Tamil month of Margazhi, and the Madras Music Season.

The Music Academy’s own history of the festival explains a bit of why it falls in December. At its first annual conference in 1929, the Academy decided on a week-long festival to coincide with Christmas week, a time when the Madras High Court was closed for the holidays, which gave lawyers, advocates and judges, many of them patrons of Carnatic music, the time to attend concerts. Over the decades, the season grew far beyond that first week.

The Music Academy lists its most recent edition, the 99th Annual Conference and Concerts, as running from 15 December 2025 to 1 January 2026, followed by an annual dance festival in early January. That gives a useful picture of the usual shape: a mid-December start, with a long run of daily programmes into the new year.

When does the 2026 season start?

Margazhi, the Tamil month that anchors the season, begins in mid-December. One panchang-based guide we found calculates it as starting on Wednesday, 16 December 2026 and ending on 14 January 2027, and a weekday check confirms 16 December 2026 is a Wednesday. We found only one source for those exact dates, so please treat them as a pointer, and check a Tamil panchang for the final dates.

The concert calendar is a separate matter. Each sabha publishes its own schedule, and we could not find a published 2026 to 2027 programme for the Music Academy or other sabhas when we checked. Past practice suggests the Music Academy’s festival begins in the middle of December, but the actual date, the opening event and the list of artists for 2026 are the Academy’s to announce. Check the websites of the Music Academy and the other sabhas you are interested in for the official schedule.

Not every sabha follows the same calendar. Some programmes start before December, and others carry on into January, so the season is better seen as a long stretch than a single event with fixed dates.

Which airport serves Chennai?

Chennai International Airport, airport code MAA, is operated by the Airports Authority of India. The airport lies in the south of the city, in the Tirusulam and Meenambakkam area. A new integrated terminal opened in April 2023, adding capacity. The code MAA comes from Madras, the city’s name until 1996, so the three letters on your boarding pass are a small reminder of the old name, which is also why the festival is still often called the Madras Music Season.

Chennai Metro has a station at the airport, which can be a way to avoid road traffic. Check the latest timings before you rely on it. On concert evenings, road traffic around the main sabha areas can be heavy, so leave time between landing and your first programme.

How should you plan flights for the music season?

We are not giving fares or crowd figures. What we can say is that the season overlaps with the Christmas and New Year holidays, when many Indian families travel, and flights on popular dates tend to be busy and costly nearer the date. Some practical steps follow.

  • Pick your concerts first. Decide the performers or events you do not want to miss, then check the sabha’s date. Flights come after that.
  • Avoid the peak holiday days if you can. The days just before Christmas and just after New Year are often the busiest. A midweek trip in early or mid-January can be easier.
  • Allow a buffer on arrival. Reach Chennai the day before an important concert, not on the same afternoon.
  • Book hotels and tickets separately. HappyFares sells flights only, so concert passes come from the sabha.
  • Use a price alert. If you are waiting for the schedule, an alert will track the fare for you.
  • Pack light. Moving between halls and stays is easier with a small bag.

If you plan to travel in both directions, book the return at the same time, since the end of the season, around the New Year, is a common time for people to head home.
