Can You Carry More Than 7 kg in Cabin Baggage on IndiGo and Air India?

On domestic economy, IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air all publish a cabin baggage limit of 7 kg, and IndiGo and Akasa also cap the three dimensions at 115 cm combined. A heavier bag is not free. Airlines say the excess is charged, usually at the counter or gate, or the bag goes into the hold. Move weight into your personal item or pre-book baggage.

Most travellers pack by feel and discover the weight at the check-in desk. Here is what each airline’s own pages say about going over 7 kg, and the simple ways to avoid a surprise charge.

What is the cabin baggage limit on IndiGo, Air India and Akasa?

All three airlines publish the same headline weight for a domestic economy cabin bag: 7 kg. The details differ slightly.

  • IndiGo: one cabin bag of up to 7 kg, with each piece no larger than 55 x 35 x 25 cm and the three dimensions together not exceeding 115 cm. IndiGo says the measurement includes handles and wheels. Its baggage policy also lets you carry one additional personal article, such as a small purse or laptop bag, within a lower weight limit stated on the page.
  • Air India: its cabin baggage page lists a maximum of 7 kg for Economy and Premium Economy, with a 115 cm total size limit, plus one small personal item that fits under the seat in front. The exact length, width and height figures are on the page, so check them before you fly.
  • Akasa Air: its baggage page lists one handbag of up to 7 kg and 115 cm (length plus width plus height), and its conditions of carriage give the dimensions as 55 cm, 35 cm and 25 cm.

Note the word “one”. The weight limit applies to the single main cabin bag, not to a stack of bags.

Can you carry more than 7 kg if you pay?

This depends on the airline and how far over you are. IndiGo’s pages say additional excess baggage charges are levied at the check-in counter or the boarding gate, and that failing to pay can result in denial of boarding. IndiGo also sells excess baggage online ahead of departure, with cut-off times that its pages state, so look at the current page rather than guessing.

With Air India, a cabin bag over the limit can attract an excess baggage charge or may have to be checked in. The exact charge and any cap are on Air India’s baggage pages and can change, so confirm them on Air India’s site. In every case, the figure to trust is the one shown for your flight, not one quoted by a friend.

Does your fare type or cabin change the limit?

Sometimes. The 7 kg figure above is for domestic economy. Business class and some premium fares can carry a different cabin allowance, which is shown on the airline’s pages and at booking. For example, IndiGo’s Stretch terms list a higher hand baggage allowance (12 kg in the terms we found) for Stretch and Stretch+ customers than the 7 kg economy limit, so check your booking. If you are on a premium fare, check your booking rather than assuming the economy rule applies.

Fare type matters more for checked baggage. IndiGo Saver and Air India Value are entry fares, and the checked allowance on them differs from the flexible fares. If you are packing a big bag and hoping to cabin it, compare the cost of adding checked baggage at booking against the cost of paying excess at the airport.

What actually happens at the gate or check-in if your bag is too heavy?

Staff may weigh or size cabin bags at check-in or at the boarding gate. If the bag is over the limit, the airline can ask you to pay the excess baggage charge or to put the bag in the hold. Hold baggage is subject to the airline’s checked allowance, so a bag moved to the hold can still be charged if you have no allowance left.

A few things reduce the risk:

  • Weigh your bag at home with a luggage scale, and leave a small margin.
  • Keep a laptop, power bank and medicines in your personal item, within its stated limit.
  • If the bag is close to the limit, pre-book checked baggage online before the airline’s stated cut-off.

How can you avoid paying for extra weight?

The cheapest fix is to plan before the airport. Pre-booked checked baggage is generally priced lower than paying at the counter, so decide at booking whether you need it. If you travel often with more than 7 kg, choose a fare that includes checked baggage instead of paying separately each time. A soft-sided bag that you can squeeze into the sizer also helps, since a bag can fail on dimensions even when the weight is fine.

Common Questions

Is the 7 kg limit the same on IndiGo and Air India?

Yes for domestic economy, both publish 7 kg. Their size rules are worded differently, so check each airline’s cabin baggage page for the exact dimensions.

Does the personal item count toward the 7 kg?

IndiGo’s baggage policy treats a small personal article, such as a purse or laptop bag, as an additional item with its own lower weight limit. Air India also allows a small personal item under the seat. Check the page for the limit.

Will they weigh my bag at the gate?

They can. Airlines may check cabin bags at check-in or at the gate, and IndiGo’s pages say excess charges can be levied at either place.

Is the limit higher in business class?

It can be. Premium cabins and some premium fares list different hand baggage allowances. Check your booking and the airline’s page for your cabin.

Can I pre-book extra baggage online?

Yes, IndiGo and Akasa Air both sell excess baggage online ahead of the flight, and Air India lists excess baggage rates on its site. Cut-off times are stated by each airline.

Does a heavy bag affect check-in cost?

No. Checking in is free on Indian airlines, both online and at the airport. Any charge for heavy baggage is separate and is about the bag, not the check-in.
