Air India and Air India Express are both part of the Air India group, but they sell different products. Air India is the full-service carrier with Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First, and checked baggage built into every fare. Air India Express is the value carrier: its cheapest tier, Xpress Lite, includes no checked bag at all. Since 22 May 2026 both earn Maharaja Points.

They share an owner, a broad brand and increasingly a loyalty programme, so it is easy to assume the two are interchangeable. They are not. The gap shows up in what your fare includes, and it is widest at the cheapest end.
Are Air India and Air India Express the same airline?
They are separate airlines inside the same group. Air India is the full-service carrier. Air India Express is the group’s value arm, and it absorbed the former AirAsia India operation, so a lot of the narrowbody flying that used to sit under other brands now runs as Air India Express.
Practically, this means your booking reference, baggage rules, meal policy and change fees all follow whichever airline actually operates the flight. Air India’s baggage table explicitly applies to Air India-operated flights only, not to Air India Express or codeshare segments. Check the operating carrier on your ticket before you assume anything.
How does checked baggage differ?
This is the single biggest practical difference, because Air India Express sells a genuinely bag-free fare and Air India does not.

On Air India, fares of 25 kg and above are carried as 2 pieces, anything under 25 kg is a single piece, and no single piece may exceed 32 kg. Business runs 30 kg to 40 kg depending on tier and First is 40 kg.
Internationally the pattern flips in Air India Express’s favour on some routes. Air India Express carries 30 kg in 2 pieces between India and the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Singapore, and 20 kg in 2 pieces to Thailand and Nepal. Xpress Biz gets 40 kg in 2 pieces. Xpress Lite stays cabin-only even on international sectors, which catches people out on Gulf runs.
Air India’s international allowance splits by region. Weight regions such as the Gulf, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand and SAARC give Economy roughly 25 kg to 30 kg. Piece regions such as the USA, Canada, Europe, the UK, Japan, Korea and Israel give Economy 2 pieces of 23 kg.
What about meals, seats and cabins?
Air India is a full-service carrier, so meals are part of the fare and the aircraft carry up to four cabins depending on type: Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First.
Air India Express is a two-cabin operation, Economy and Business. Its meal and seat benefits are attached to the tier you buy. Xpress Classic includes a complimentary standard seat and a Lite Bite meal. Xpress Flexo adds Prime as well as Standard seat selection, the Lite Bite meal, and no convenience fee. Xpress Lite and Xpress Value do not include a meal, so you either pre-book one or buy onboard. Business on Air India Express includes 25 kg checked, a business seat and hot meals or Lite Bite.
Which is cheaper to change or cancel?
Air India Express prices flexibility openly by tier, and the spread is large. Xpress Lite is the strictest: on cancellation only taxes are refundable, and a date change costs around ₹3,000. Xpress Value cancels at roughly ₹4,300 with a date change near ₹3,000. Xpress Classic drops to about ₹2,000 to cancel more than 3 days out, with date changes from roughly ₹300. Xpress Flexo is the most forgiving, cancelling at about ₹1,500 with free date changes more than 3 days before departure.
Air India’s Economy tiers work the same way in principle, with Value the most restrictive and Flex the most flexible. Whichever airline you pick, DGCA rules also give you a short window after booking in which a booking can be cancelled without the airline’s own cancellation fee, and taxes are refundable in every case.
Do Maharaja Points work on both?
Yes, and this is recent. Air India announced that Maharaja Club members can earn Maharaja Points and Tier Points on Air India Express-operated flights taken on or after 22 May 2026, across more than 55 destinations in South, Southeast and West Asia. Points can be earned when booking through the Air India and Air India Express websites and apps and through major travel agents.
Two limits are worth knowing. Points on Air India Express flights are earned only on eligible cash bookings, and redemption on Air India Express applies to codeshare flights from the same date. If loyalty matters to you, that change removes much of the old reason to avoid the Express product.
