Vishu 2027: Date and Flight Planning for Kerala

Vishu 2027 falls on Thursday, 15 April 2027, which is Medam 1 in the Malayalam calendar, according to Public Holidays and Office Holidays. Kerala travellers usually fly into Cochin International Airport, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport or Calicut International Airport at Kozhikode. Because the festival is on a Thursday, flights on Wednesday and the weekend either side are likely to be in demand.

Vishu marks the Malayalam new year for many families in Kerala, and a lot of people living in other Indian cities plan to be home for it. Here is how to sort out dates, airports and booking timing well before April 2027.

When is Vishu in 2027?

Public Holidays and Office Holidays both list Vishu in Kerala on Thursday, 15 April 2027. Prokerala describes the festival as marking the first day of the Medam month in the Malayalam calendar.

You may see 14 April mentioned online. The Mesha Sankranti, when the sun enters Aries, falls on 14 April in 2027, but Hindutone explains that it comes after Kerala’s day cut-off, so the Malayalam calendar moves Medam 1 and Vishu to 15 April. Drik Panchang’s Vishu Kani page also lists Thursday, 15 April 2027 and gives the Sankranti moment as 3:33 PM on 14 April for New Delhi, so you may still see 14 April quoted elsewhere. If your family follows a specific almanac or temple calendar, ask them which date they will observe.

For planning, the useful weekdays are these. Vishu is on Thursday 15 April. Friday 16 April is a normal working day for most people, so taking leave that day gives you a four-day break through Sunday 18 April. Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 April are the weekend before.

Which airport should you fly into for Vishu?

Kerala has several airports, and the best one is usually the one closest to your family home. Official names, as published by the airports themselves or by the Airports Authority of India (AAI):

  • Kochi: Cochin International Airport, operated by Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL).
  • Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. AAI’s page says it is operated by TRV (Kerala) International Airport Ltd. under a public-private partnership, with a concession of 50 years from 14 October 2021.
  • Kozhikode: Calicut International Airport, run by AAI.

Did you know the city is called Kozhikode today, yet the airport is still listed as Calicut International Airport on AAI’s website? Tickets may say CCJ or Calicut, so do not worry if the city name looks different from what your family uses.

If your hometown sits between two airports, such as in central or northern Kerala, compare the onward road time from each. A slightly dearer flight to the nearer airport can save hours on the road, especially on a festival morning.

When should you book flights for Vishu?

Airline fares are dynamic, and fares for popular festival dates tend to rise as the date comes closer. Once your leave is approved, it is generally a good idea to fix your dates and search. Nothing about the exact booking window is guaranteed, so use price alerts and watch the trend for your own route.

  • Search Wednesday 14 April as well as Tuesday 13 April. Departing a day earlier can mean more choice of timings.
  • For returns, compare Sunday 18 April with Monday 19 April. Return travel on the last day of a break is usually the busiest.
  • Check the fare family rules before you pay. The cheapest fares often carry stricter change and cancellation terms, which matters if your leave might shift.
  • If your family needs to travel together, book on one booking where possible so that everyone gets the same timings.

What should you know about airport day?

Checking in is free on every Indian airline, online or at the airport. Web check-in simply saves time, and your airline’s own deadlines for bag drop and boarding still apply.

Gifts for family are a common reason for heavier bags at festival time. Baggage allowances are set by each airline and fare type, so look at the allowance on your booking before you pack. Extra baggage bought at the airport is typically costlier than allowance bought in advance, so decide early.

If anyone travelling needs wheelchair or special assistance, request it from the airline directly when you book, not at the last minute.

Is the train an option instead?

From Bengaluru, Chennai or other southern cities, some families compare rail with a flight. From Delhi, Mumbai or further, flying usually saves the most time. Count the whole journey including airport transfers, not just the flight time.
