For flights in India, the safe rule is to put trekking poles, ice axes, crampons and camping knives in checked baggage. Knives and other sharp instruments are listed as prohibited in the cabin by IndiGo and Air India Express, and spiked or pointed gear is likely to be refused at the checkpoint. Keep soft gear such as jackets and boots in your cabin bag if you like.

Flying to Leh, Dehradun, Bagdogra or Srinagar with a trek in mind? The airport checkpoint treats pointed and bladed gear very differently from boots and jackets.
Can trekking poles go in cabin baggage in India?
It is not worth the risk. We could not find an official Indian rule that names trekking poles. Airline lists do name knives, scissors and other sharp instruments as prohibited in the cabin, and poles have metal tips that a screener may treat as sharp. Guidance reported from the Airports Authority of India also lists sports items such as ski poles among things banned from hand luggage, though we could not read an official notice ourselves.
Collapsible poles can look harmless, but they are long, rigid and pointed. Pack them in checked baggage, with the carbide tips covered by rubber caps or a bit of foam.
Did you know that checked bags are screened too? Sharp gear that is wrapped and labelled in the middle of a pack is much easier for an inspector to handle than points sticking out of a bag.

What about ice axes and crampons?
These belong in checked baggage. An ice axe is a pointed, bladed tool, and crampons are rows of metal spikes. Airline cabin rules ban sharp instruments, and we found no Indian guidance that allows either item in the cabin.
- Fit protective covers to the pick, adze and spike of an axe, or wrap them in cardboard.
- Put crampons in their carry bag or wrap the points in a cloth, then place them in the middle of your pack.
- Do not leave metal gear loose in a soft bag, where it can cut through the fabric.
If you are hiring this gear at your destination, leaving it at home is the easiest way to avoid any issue.
Can you carry a camping knife or multi-tool?
Not in the cabin. IndiGo lists knives, scissors, Swiss army knives and other sharp instruments as prohibited in cabin baggage, and Air India Express lists knives and scissors as items you cannot carry on board. A multi-tool with a blade falls in the same group.
In checked baggage, wrap the knife or multi-tool, put it in the middle of the bag and keep it out of outer pockets. We cover the wider question in our post on knives, scissors and razors on Indian flights.
What hiking gear can stay in the cabin?
Most soft and non-sharp items are fine. The bigger concern is weight and space, since a cabin bag is limited by size and weight under your airline’s policy. Good candidates for the cabin:
- Hiking boots, if you prefer to wear them on the flight and avoid the extra weight in the hold.
- A warm jacket, which you will want at the destination, and cuts down your checked weight.
- Medication, documents, a phone and its charger.
- A head torch with batteries installed. Spare lithium batteries must go in hand baggage, not in the hold, according to Air India’s cabin baggage page.
Put your power bank in the cabin too. Spare and portable batteries are not for checked baggage.
What about trekking backpacks and sleeping bags?
A large trekking rucksack is normally a checked item. Straps can catch on the belt, so close buckles and tuck loose straps in, or put the pack in a duffel or a large plastic bag for the journey. A sleeping bag and mat are soft items and can go in the pack. Count their weight within your checked allowance.
Gas canisters and stoves are a separate dangerous goods topic, which we cover in our camping gas stove post. Do not pack fuel.
A simple way to plan is to sort your kit into two piles before you leave home. Anything pointed, bladed or spiked goes in the checked pile. Anything soft, electronic or personal goes in the cabin pile. Then weigh the checked pile, so you are not repacking at the counter.
Common Questions
Can I carry trekking poles in my hand luggage?
Do not plan on it. No official Indian rule names them, but pointed tips can be treated as sharp, and guidance reported from the Airports Authority of India lists ski poles among banned items. Check them in.
Are ice axes allowed on Indian flights?
In checked baggage, with covers on the points. Sharp instruments are prohibited in the cabin. If in doubt, ask your airline before you fly.
Can I take crampons on a plane?
Treat them as checked-baggage items because of the spikes. Wrap the points securely.
Can I take hiking boots in the cabin?
Yes, there is no sharp or dangerous element in boots. Knock off loose mud before you pack them.
Do I need to declare mountaineering gear?
Ordinary hiking gear in a checked bag normally just counts toward your allowance. Large items may be handled as sports equipment under your airline’s rules, so ask the airline if you are carrying technical kit.
Can I carry a power bank for my phone on a trek?
Yes, in hand baggage only. Air India’s cabin page limits spare lithium-ion batteries to 100 Wh and states that they must stay in hand baggage.
