Yes, you can take a bicycle on Indian domestic flights, but only as special checked baggage. Airlines such as Air India, IndiGo and Akasa treat bikes as sports equipment, usually charge a handling fee, and expect the bicycle to be packed in a proper travel case. Contact the airline before the day of travel to confirm the current terms.

Cyclists often assume a bike is simply oversized luggage. In practice each airline sets its own conditions, and the fee and packing rules are where people get caught out.
Do Indian airlines accept bicycles as checked baggage?
Yes. IndiGo’s baggage policy lists bicycles among the special checked baggage items alongside golf bags and surfboards, with the charge applied per piece and per sector. Akasa Air lists bicycles in the sports equipment items for which a handling fee applies, together with golf bags, surfboards, skis and scuba gear. Air India’s special baggage page accepts one standard bicycle, which must be non-motorised.
That last point matters. Air India’s page excludes e-bikes, and batteries on electric bikes are a separate dangerous goods problem. Do not plan to fly an e-bike without written confirmation from the airline.
Did you know that air pressure changes between the ground and cruising altitude, which is why cyclists commonly let some air out of their tyres before packing?

How must a bicycle be packed for a flight?
Air India’s page says a bicycle is accepted only when packed in a suitable bicycle travel case or similar container. Other airlines expect much the same, even when their pages are less specific. A bare bike with a plastic wrap is likely to be refused or to arrive damaged.
A sensible packing routine:
- Remove or turn the handlebars, and take off the pedals.
- Lower or remove the saddle and protect the frame at contact points with foam or cloth.
- Remove the rear derailleur or protect it, since it bends easily.
- Deflate the tyres partly, as air pressure changes in the hold.
- Put your name and phone number on the case, inside and out.
Pack tools and spares in checked baggage. Multi-tools often include blades, which are not allowed in the cabin.
What does it cost to fly with a bicycle?
The fee depends on the airline, route and when you book. Published amounts differ between sources and change, so we are not quoting a figure. What is consistent is the structure:
- A handling fee per item applies on top of any excess baggage charge.
- The bicycle’s weight still counts toward your checked allowance on Akasa, and excess weight is charged on top.
- Booking the item in advance is usually cheaper than paying at the airport.
Air India has also run a waiver of sports equipment handling fees on selected fares when the item is pre-booked in advance, reported in July 2026. It does not apply to airport purchases, and excess weight charges can still apply. Read the airline’s page for the exact fare types and the cut-off time before you rely on it.
What size and weight limits apply?
Air India’s special baggage page gives a maximum of 300 cm in combined length, width and height, and 32 kg for sports equipment, with a cap on how many items count under the allowance. Anything larger has to move as cargo. Most bikes in a standard travel case fit within this, but measure the case, not the bike.
IndiGo and Akasa publish their own conditions on their baggage pages. Check the limits for your airline and aircraft, since smaller aircraft can have tighter hold doors.
When should you tell the airline?
Before you get to the airport. IndiGo notes that charges and packaging requirements vary by item and flight, and bookings for special items can be made through the airline. Akasa lets you pre-pay for up to two sports items per passenger per journey online. A bicycle that has not been declared may be handled at an oversize counter, and acceptance can depend on hold space on the day.
Give yourself extra time at check-in. Oversize items are taken to a separate counter and may need an inspection.
Common Questions
Can I carry a bicycle in the cabin?
No. A bicycle is too large for cabin baggage and travels in the hold as special baggage. Only small accessories such as a helmet fit in the cabin.
Do I need to pack my bicycle in a box?
Air India says a bicycle must be in a suitable travel case or similar container. Treat that as a sensible standard whichever airline you fly, and use a hard case or a sturdy bike box.
Can I fly with an electric bicycle?
Air India’s page covers only non-motorised bicycles. Electric bikes involve large lithium batteries, so ask the airline in writing before you plan on it.
Is a handling fee charged even if I am within my baggage allowance?
Typically yes. Air India and Akasa both describe a handling fee for sports equipment, separate from any excess weight charge, except where a waiver applies.
Can I book the bicycle after buying my ticket?
Usually yes, through the airline’s website or call centre. Doing it earlier is better, since hold space for special items can be limited.
Can I take a helmet and pump?
A helmet is fine in the cabin. Pumps and CO2 cartridges are a different matter: gas cartridges are generally restricted, so check the airline’s dangerous goods page.
