There is no single “45 minute rule” in the airlines’ own wording today. It is a common shorthand for an older, shorter counter cut-off. IndiGo and Air India currently publish check-in counter closing at 60 minutes before domestic departure, with boarding gates closing a few minutes before the flight. Reaching the airport about 2 hours early is generally enough.

If you have heard that you must reach the counter 45 minutes before a domestic flight in India, you are not alone. Here is what that number really means, and what the airlines say now.
What is the 45 minute rule for domestic flights?
“45 minutes” is a shorthand that travellers and many older articles use for the time before departure when the check-in counter closes on a domestic flight. It is not a phrase we could find on the current pages of IndiGo or Air India. Those airlines publish their own cut-offs, and they have been longer than 45 minutes in the pages we could read.
Some third-party guides still repeat 45 minutes, and some older news reports quote it as the domestic figure. Because this number varies by source and by period, treat it as outdated shorthand, not as the rule to plan around. If you plan to arrive with only 45 minutes to spare, you may find the counter already closed.
What do IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air say about counter and gate closing?
The two clocks that matter are the check-in counter (where bags are accepted and boarding passes issued) and the boarding gate. They close at different times.
| Airline | Check-in counter (domestic) | Boarding gate |
|---|---|---|
| IndiGo | Closes 60 minutes before departure, per IndiGo’s check-in requirements page | IndiGo’s information pages mention 25 minutes before departure |
| Air India | Closes 60 minutes before departure, per its domestic check-in page | Air India’s page mentions 20 minutes before departure |
| Akasa Air | Check the Akasa app or your booking for your flight | Check the Akasa app or your booking for your flight |
We could confirm a domestic figure for Akasa Air only indirectly, so we have left it out. Akasa’s own notice for one international flight lists a 60 minute counter cut-off and a 25 minute gate cut-off, but domestic timings can differ. Always read the timing printed on your own ticket or in the airline’s app, since airlines can change it by airport or by flight.

Does web check-in change the cut-off?
Web check-in does not remove the gate deadline. IndiGo’s pages describe domestic web check-in as running from 48 hours until 60 minutes before departure. After that window, you must check in at the airport counter, which is also near its own closing time by then.
Checking in is free on Indian airlines, both online and at the airport. If you carry only cabin baggage, checking in online and heading straight to security saves time. If you have a bag to drop, you still need to reach the airline counter before it closes.
Did you know? The gate closing time is a separate clock from the check-in counter, which is why a passenger can be checked in and still be refused boarding for arriving at the gate late.
Is 2 hours early enough for a domestic flight?
For most domestic trips, yes. Two hours before departure leaves you a full hour before the counter closes at 60 minutes, which gives room for the queue, bag drop and security. It is a sensible default for a morning flight from a large metro airport on a normal day.
You may want more time in these cases:
- Festival weeks and long weekends, when terminals are crowded. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, so the days around it are likely to be busy.
- Large airports with long walks from the entrance to security.
- When you are checking in a bag, travelling with children, or need extra help at the airport.
- First flights of the morning, when many departures leave at nearly the same time.
If you have only cabin baggage and have already checked in online, 90 minutes may be workable at a smaller airport, but there is little margin if something goes wrong. Choose the larger buffer when in doubt.
What happens if you miss the check-in cut-off?
If the counter has closed, the airline can decline to check you in even if you are standing in the terminal and the flight has not left. What you can do next depends on the fare and the airline. Speak to the airline staff at the airport right away, and ask what rebooking or refund options apply to your fare. Do not assume you will be accommodated on the next flight.
Common Questions
Is the 45 minute rule official?
We could not find it as current wording on the pages of IndiGo or Air India. It appears to be an older or informal figure. Use the airline’s published timing instead.
When does the IndiGo check-in counter close for domestic flights?
IndiGo’s check-in requirements page states that counters close 60 minutes before scheduled departure. Confirm on your ticket, as airlines can vary timings.
When does the boarding gate close?
It closes earlier than departure, by roughly 20 to 25 minutes on the airline pages we could read. Be at the gate well before this, not just before it closes.
Can I check in online after the counter closes?
Not if the web check-in window has ended. For IndiGo domestic flights, that window ends 60 minutes before departure.
Does airport check-in cost money?
No. Checking in is free on Indian airlines, online or at the airport.
Is 2 hours early enough if I have a checked bag?
Usually yes, at a typical domestic airport on a normal day. Add time during festivals or at very busy airports.
